RECEPTION RETIREMENT FOR PAUL HODSON

On Thursday 29 August many Members, guests and colleagues gathered on the Terrace to say farewell to Paul Hodson, who was retiring as Head Chef after nearly 25 years. Pipe Major Ian King piped in the haggis and gave a unique Address to the Haggis, ably assisted by Paul who has perfected this over the years.  Next Donald McNab, on behalf of the Friends of Scottish Rugby, presented Paul with a dirk specially made with horn from Balmoral and his very own “Jimmy” hat. Vice Chairman, David Guild, recited, ‘An Ode to Paul Hodson’, penned by Jock Meikle in the style of William Topaz McGonagall, the Scottish doggerel poet.  Club Chairman, David Coughtrie, spoke about Paul’s achievements, in particular, raising from a low level the club’s reputation for food and fine dining. He then presented Paul with a cheque, comprised of members’ donations, together with a Quaich and hip flask, mentioning the need to include a bottle of whisky to fill them. In reply Paul made a sentimental and humorous speech thanking many, including his two daughters, Don Irwin, President the League of Club Chefs, some fellow Head Chefs, suppliers and former colleagues, who were also present. It was a great evening and a special occasion to say ‘cheerio’ and ‘thank you’ to Paul. He will be missed but leaves the Club in the capable hands of his protégé, Michael Garcia, new Head Chef, and Mick O’Sullivan, Banqueting Chef, who will have achieved 20 years’ service later this year.
